Analysis of management and policy principles (Task 5.1)

The task here is the compilation of a comparative analysis of state and international policy principles regarding the marine environment and the sustainability of the marine and coastal resources. The aim is to make a comparison of the results and relate these to regional problems.

Background and Rationale

The challenge of coastal zone management is to ensure sustainable utilization of natural resources under intense environmental change pressure. The current limited understanding of global and regional changes that impact local coastal systems hampers attempts to meet this challenge. Concerning living resources, fisheries as well as aquaculture production in the Mediterranean has been expanding rapidly over recent years. In the Mediterranean and Black Sea , captures have stabilized and conventional species fully exploited, over-exploited, depleted or in the process of rebuilding strength. The scope of this task is to account for the sustainable management of fisheries and aquaculture production and to identify the gaps in the policy and formulate recommendations for policymaking and management
